The TEM uses a focused electron beam that can examine sectioned samples at high magnification and resolution.  The fine structure of biological materials as well as nanoparticles and viruses can all be viewed at magnifications up to 500,000x. This instrument is scheduled to be replaced in 2015, which will greatly improve our capabilities with the latest technology.
