The Williams College Sigma Xi Chapter has played an active role on the Williams campus since it was founded as the Sigma Xi Club in 1969. Sigma Xi is a national society honoring and encouraging research in science. In addition to sponsoring other events, two lectures are given each year by a Williams College faculty member from the Science Center. Speakers in 2009-10 are Michelle Thaller, Assistant Director for Science Communication of NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in the fall of 2009, and Joan Edwards from the biology department in the spring of 2010.
At Commencement, we honor our students who have written the most outstanding theses, and who are prospective scientists, with election to associate membership in Sigma Xi. We have a morning ceremony, the hour before Phi Beta Kappa has their yearly induction of the students they honor.
